Strategy documents
The overall intent of the Destination Auckland Recovery Plan is to provide leadership to the Auckland visitor economy by guiding an urgent and unified response to the far-reaching impacts of COVID-19. Guided by the principles of kotahitanga, kaitiakitanga and manaakitanga – as well as the strong foundations of the Destination AKL 2025 strategy – ATEED has engaged with industry and stakeholders to develop this first-stage recovery plan to support Auckland’s re-emergence as a more resilient and sustainable domestic and international destination.
Each year ATEED completes a Statement of Intent as required under the Local Government Act 2002. The Statement of Intent set out the objectives, nature and scope of activities undertaken and performance targets for ATEED. It represents the objectives, nature and scope of activities undertaken and performance targets by which we will be measured. It covers the three years of our operations from 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2023.
Auckland’s visitor economy has embarked on an exciting new direction of travel with the launch of Destination AKL 2025 – a new strategy that encourages the sustainable growth of one of Auckland’s and New Zealand’s most important industries. Launched in May 2018, Destination AKL 2025 has been initiated by ATEED, and guided by an industry leadership group spanning the breadth of Auckland’s visitor economy.
Auckland is poised to build on its reputation as a global events destination, driving economic growth for the region and the country. Auckland’s Major Events Strategy enables Auckland to achieve this ambition, and is a blueprint for transforming events and the outcomes they generate for our region.
Auckland is poised to significantly build its visitor economy with the help of a 10-year Business Events Plan designed to grow the value of the conventions sector to a $430 million industry by 2023. The plan outlines how Auckland Convention Bureau (ACB) will help build a world-class business events sector in Auckland over the next decade. Auckland’s first Business Events Plan has been developed by ACB – part of Auckland Tourism, Event and Economic Development (ATEED).
The Auckland Innovation Plan outlines the priorities and actions identified by ATEED to build a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in Auckland. This plan aims to build on Auckland’s entrepreneurial foundations and develop innovation led entrepreneurship as a key driver for Auckland’s economic growth. This will ensure our businesses grow faster, employ more skilled Aucklanders in higher paid jobs, are flexible and well positioned to take advantage of emerging opportunities – both nationally and globally.
The ATEED Strategy, released in July 2018, specifies how the organisation intends to deliver on Council's economic growth priorities.
Annual highlights
From the outstanding success of the Tripartite Economic Summit Auckland 2016, to the opening of the internationally connected AR/VR Garage; and from the inaugural Tāmaki Herenga Waka Festival to the ongoing growth of the region’s record-breaking visitor economy, ATEED had an exceptional year.
From the outstanding success of Auckland’s high-tech business delegation to the Tripartite Economic Alliance summit in Los Angeles, to the array of international business growth opportunities afforded by an unprecedented major events season, Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) had an exceptional 2014/15 year.
From the opening of Kumeu Film Studios, to the outstanding World Masters Games 2017; and from the expansion of GridAKL innovation precinct to supporting several more successful JobFests, ATEED delivered another strong year of initiatives focused on helping increase Auckland’s productivity, and the prosperity of all Aucklanders.
From the success of Auckland’s 100-strong business delegation to the Tripartite Economic Summit – Guangzhou 2017, to the release of a visionary new destination management strategy for our visitor economy; and from attracting a new $250m hotel investment in Auckland, to thousands of youth attracted to training or jobs in the construction sector – it was another strong year of ATEED delivering results and value for Auckland.
From the massive boost for our world-class screen industry talent and infrastructure from major new productions coming to Auckland, to the success of the Tripartite 2019 event; and from the truly game-changing tourism skills platform we developed and launched, to helping the economic development of Auckland Council’s priority transformation areas in the region’s south and west, we made a great contribution on behalf of Council to raising the prosperity of our region.
From the hundreds of millions in new investment we helped to attract to Auckland, to the huge support we provided to small businesses impacted by COVID-19; and from the vibrant waterfront Tāmaki Herenga Waka Festival celebrating the region’s unique Maori culture, to skills programmes helping Pacific people into employment, we made a great contribution on behalf of Council to raising the prosperity of our region in what was an extraordinary year.
