Plans for the New Zealand International Convention Centre

Business event organisers looking for a sustainable hub for upcoming, large-scale, events will find all that they need in the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC).

Set for completion in Auckland’s central business district in 2025, NZICC will be the country’s leading events centre with 33 meeting spaces across 32,500sqm of floor area, able to host events for up to 4,000 people.

NZICC has sustainable ambitions which are shaping its build from the ground up. Once completed it will aspire to achieve an Earth Check Gold Award – a sign of their commitment to sustainability. The centre is also on track for a Gold Green Building Council Rating, an AIPC Quality Standards Accreditation, and a Gold LEED Rating.

NZICC has committed to being a carbon neutral venue, planning to reduce emissions by 5% year on year to zero by 2050 in line with the Net Zero Carbon Events Pledge. The centre will use no single use plastic and is aiming to send zero waste to landfill by 2030.

“Our aspirations are merely just a starting point for the NZICC,” says Prue Daly, NZICC Director of Sales and Marketing.

“As we get closer to opening and as we begin to welcome international event guests, we see our sustainability legacy only strengthening and look forward to finding new ways to champion sustainable tourism.”

NZICC is setting a 10% social procurement target (double the New Zealand government target of 5%) to ensure supplier diversity that supports local. It plans to provide empowering employment opportunities for disadvantaged youth; be a disability confident organisation that removes barriers to employment and promotion for people of all abilities; and is coordinating a food donation partnership with Kiwi Harvest and Auckland City Mission.

The NZICC is located within the SkyCity Auckland entertainment precinct and works collaboratively with SkyCity and precinct partners Wētā Workshop Unleashed and All Blacks Experience to create the ideal sustainable space for business events, accommodation, social functions and tour experiences. Where possible, they all collaborate to reach sustainability targets and minimise negative environmental impacts together.

“As we will have New Zealand’s premier conference venue, we feel a responsibility to lead the way in sustainable events.”

The New Zealand International Conference Centre is a member of the Auckland Convention Bureau and aims to create seamless and sustainable experiences for business event organisers. The centre will be completed in 2025 and open to inquiries now for a range of business events.
