Encircled by three harbours, we’ve got 3,700 kilometres of coastline – which means hundreds of Auckland’s beaches are within easy reach.

And they’re all so different, from idyllic white-sand beaches to wild black-sand beaches. Get into some of the countless activities on and off the water or just unwind and soak up the views.

Water and beach safety

Stay safe while you’re enjoying our beautiful beaches as water does present a potential hazard. There are steps you can take to keep safe while you’re in, on and under the water. See New Zealand’s Water Safety Code.

Before heading to one of Auckland’s favourite swimming spots, check Safeswim for live information on water quality and swimming conditions. Safeswim lets you know where it’s safe to swim.

Find patrolled beaches

Surf Life Saving New Zealand patrols over 80 of New Zealand’s busiest beaches each summer. Always swim between the red and yellow patrol flags, which identify the safest swimming areas. Not all of our beaches are patrolled – you can find patrolled beaches at findabeach.co.nz.

Did you know?

We’re one of the few cities in the world sitting between two harbours on two separate major bodies of water – the Tasman Sea to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east.
